Incredible Sweden: huge sensation from the debutant on the first day of the Championship

On the 24 of July the Beach Handball World Championship in Kazan has started. On the courts of the Palace of Water Sports 32 games were played among men’s and women’s teams. That was spectacular, interesting and very exciting for the big crowd in the stands.

On the first day the fans saw the sensation in the men’s tournament. Sweden was the team to remember. The Swedish team has never participated in the World Championship before, but today it claimed a resounding victory over the hosts Russia despite the lost in the first set 13:20. In the second set team Sweden showed the character and won it 23:18 and later finally beat Russia in the shout-out 9:6. But it was not the end of the Swedish fairytale as they defeated the four-time World Champions Brazil – 18:16, 13:16, 12:10. Now Tre Kronor leads the group C.

Another drama was in the match between Russia and USA. After the loss against Sweden, the hosts were in a difficult situation and had no right to lose again. It went again to the shout-out series where the Russian team was in trouble, but an amazing save from Anton Zabolotskiy turned it around and Igor Neklyudov sealed the final result – 9:6. Now Russia has one more game in the preliminary round on 25 of July against Brazil.

The rest of the results did not bring any surprises. The defending champion Croatia leads the group A beating Uruguay (2:1) and Argentina (2:0). Spain tops the group B with victories over Vietnam and New Zealand with the score 2:0 in both matches. Qatar is the favorite of the group C winning the matches with Denmark and Australia by the score 2:0.
